The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to investing in affordable housing solutions for all Tasmanians, including a particular focus on youth homelessness.
Youth Homelessness Matters Day was marked today with a community event in Franklin Square, Hobart, which I was pleased to attend to show the Government’s strong support for addressing this serious problem.
Overall, support for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness is provided through Housing Connect, our one-stop shop for all Tasmanians’ housing needs.
The Government is also actively working with community service organisations to provide accommodation specifically for young people.
Construction is underway on the 46-unit Trinity House in North Hobart, which will help turn lives around by offering modern homes with training opportunities for young Tasmanians in need and at risk of homelessness.
In the North, we have Thyne House, a 30-bed Supported Accommodation Facility for young people aged 16-25 years.
Another Supported Accommodation Facility for youth is also planned for the North-West Coast, with the Government committed to purchasing land to make this possible.
Across the State there are eight Specialist Homelessness Services that specifically cater to young people aged 13-20 years.
Addressing youth homelessness, and homelessness generally, is the aim of the Government’s Affordable Housing Strategy, which will be launched later this year to drive the State’s future housing reform agenda over the next 10 years.
