Work Begins on Reintroducing School Nurses

The Liberal Government has commenced delivering on a commitment to reintroduce nurses to Tasmanian state schools.

With an initial investment of $4.4 million over its first term, the Government has a long-term plan to introduce a contemporary model of child and youth health nurses across all Tasmanian public schools.

I am pleased to announce today that Julia Taylor, who is currently employed with the THO-North West, has been appointed the project manager for this program.

Over the next 12 months, Ms Taylor will work with a range of stakeholders on preparing for the introduction of child and youth health nurses.

By July 2015, there will be 10 FTE child and youth health nurses working across government schools and by 2017 there will be 20 FTE nurses employed.

In primary schools, nurses will focus on vision and hearing checks and nutrition, while in high schools risk behaviours, mental health and sexual health will receive greater attention.

Ultimately, school nurses will support school communities to create a physical and social environment that promotes lifelong health and wellbeing.
