Win for motorists with fuel price app

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to reducing the cost of living for Tasmanians.

The fickle price of petrol can be a frustration for motorists who want improved availability and clarity of fuel price information so they can make an informed choice when they fill up their cars.

Today I am pleased to announce two important petrol price transparency measures that will help consumers when buying petrol.

The Tasmanian Government will provide a one-off grant of $60,000 to the RACT to support a crowd-sourced Tasmanian fuel price app in partnership with GasBuddy.

GasBuddy, launched in Australia in March last year, is a free mobile app that provides public access to service station petrol prices sourced from consumer-submitted data.

By using GasBuddy, Tasmanian motorists will easily be able to find timely and accurate fuel prices in their area, and also submit fuel price updates themselves.

The second measure will see changes so that only undiscounted petrol prices are displayed on petrol price boards.

The Government will work with TCCI and the RACT on a Code of Practice to ensure this happens.

This is a win for Tasmanian consumers and brings the State into line with NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Queensland has also announced its intention to take action.

These measures will deliver better fuel price information for Tasmanian motorists without the need for legislation and ongoing costs for taxpayers.

The RACT and GasBuddy are to be congratulated and I’m confident with the support of Tasmanian motorists it will be a great success.
