Wider range of helmets means safer motorcycle riders

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to building a safer Tasmania.

The State’s Road Rules were recently amended by the Government to allow the use of motorcycle helmets that meet the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Regulation 22-05 (UN/ECE), as well as the current Australian Standard.

The UN/ECE standard is considered to provide the same level of safety protection to motorcycle riders as the Australian Standard

The benefits of amending the legislation include:

  • A wider range of motorcycle helmets that come in a greater range of sizes,
  • Increased consumer competition is driving down purchasing costs, and
  • Harmonisation across jurisdictions is making it easier for riders to ensure their helmet is legally compliant as they cross state boundaries.

The decision to legalise the UN/ECE standard is supported by the Australian and Tasmanian Motorcycle Councils, various motorcycling clubs and groups, as well as helmet importers based in Tasmania

The amended legislation brings Tasmania in line with Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and the Northern Territory.  It is understood that the remaining States and Territories have indicated that they also intend to legalise the UN/ECE standard.
