The Liberal Government is getting on with the job of delivering our Plan for the long-term future of Tasmania.
The Government is partnering with Whitelion in a $360,000 three-year program to tackle Tasmania's high youth unemployment rate.
In the budget to be released later today, we will deliver on our promises, begin fixing the budget mess and lay the foundations for the future.
Under the previous Labor-Green government, youth unemployment in Tasmania rose to unacceptably high levels.
Our partnership with Whitelion will help at-risk young people become job-ready, find long-term employment or re-engage in vocational education and training.
The project will target young people disengaged from school and at risk, or young people who have become involved with the youth justice system. They may be in out-of-home care or homeless, and may have drug and alcohol or mental health issues.
Whitelion will help these young people develop positive goals around education, training and employment. They will receive assistance and training in life skills such as building self-esteem and managing money.
They will also build skills which increase the chances of gaining employment such as workplace health and safety; workplace communication; employee responsibilities and rights; and job-seeking skills and techniques.
Participants who successfully complete their training will then be assisted and supported in finding a suitable job.
The government will provide Whitelion with a grant of $300,000 and Whitelion will contribute $60,000 for this program.
