Wheels turn at BMX State Titles

Hundreds of competitors have hit the track for the 2018 Tasmanian BMX State Titles at the Southern City BMX Club in Berriedale.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of sport and recreation and today I was delighted to officially open this annual event.

BMX is a sport that caters for riders of all ages and abilities and is an activity that all members of the family can participate in and enjoy.

The youngest competitor will be two years and the oldest 52 years, with youngsters on mini-wheelers through to Pro riders, with both males and females competing.

Since the inclusion of BMX as a medal sport in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, BMX continues to grow, with a 200 per cent increase in membership over the last five years in Tasmania.

Competitors from across Tasmania and Australia are competing, with riders from Queensland, New South Wales, Northern Territory and Victoria joining this year’s event.

Pre-title events have been held in recent days so that competitors can familiarise themselves with the track and meet other participants prior to the championships.

While the track suffered significant weather damage and flooding last week, volunteer club members have worked around the clock to restore the track for the State Titles.

A considerable amount of work occurs behind the scenes for an event like this and I’d like to thank and acknowledge all the people, many of whom are volunteers, who have dedicated their time and resources to ensure the success of this year’s event.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to supporting BMX Tasmania’s development and growth with a $7,100 grant this year, which follows the $11,000 in funding over the last two years.
