What does Labor stand for? Issue 6 – education

It’s time for Rebecca White and Tasmanian Labor to be upfront with Tasmanians about where the Labor Party stands on key issues facing Tasmania.

Throughout the first four years of Liberal Government, the Labor Party opposed the extension of Tasmanian high schools to Year 12 – a long overdue and necessary reform which will ensure Tasmanian students are no longer getting less education than students in the rest of Australia.

Over the past year, Labor’s position on extending high schools to Year 12 has become as clear as mud. Some days they appear to support our policy, other days they don’t.

Does Labor support the Liberal Government’s reforms to extend every Tasmanian High School to Year 12 by 2022?

What about the introduction of free preschool for vulnerable three year olds? Does Labor support or oppose that?

And where does Labor stand on the Liberal Government’s $179 million for Education Infrastructure – including new school builds and rebuilds which they refused to back during the election campaign. Do they support the new primary school at Legana, the new high school at Brighton, or the rebuilding of Sorell School to cater for K-12 and Cosgrove to Year 12?

The Labor Government had a woeful record on education, including trying to close schools around the State. Where do they stand on Liberal Government reforms which will help Tasmanian children get the education they need and deserve?

What does Labor stand for?

  1. Do they support the EOI process for sensible tourism proposals in National Parks, World Heritage Area and Reserves?
  2. Does Labor support industrial action impacting patients and children’s education?
  3. Does Labor have any new job creation policies, or do they still think more bureaucracy is the way to create jobs?
  4. Does Rebecca White and Tasmanian Labor support Bill Shorten’s negative gearing policy which would destroy construction jobs and result in less housing in Tasmania?
  5. Does Rebecca White and Tasmanian Labor support Tasmania’s sustainable salmon industry?
  6. Does Labor support extension of High Schools to Year 12, free preschool for eligible 3-year-olds, and building new schools around the State?
