Positions are now open for the new Mental Health Hospital in the Home service.
The THS is recruiting a psychiatrist, career medical officer, allied health professionals, registered nurses, a peer worker and a carer worker.
The successful applicants will form a team for the new 12-bed equivalent Hospital in the Home service, which is being established for the first time ever in Tasmania, based on clinical advice from the Department of Health and the Chief Psychiatrist Dr Aaron Groves.
This innovative and safe service model is used in other states around Australia and allows patients to receive hospital level care while being accommodated in their own home, where they can feel safe and be close to family.
The service will reduce the current pressure on the ED, ensuring more Tasmanians living with mental ill-health can receive the care they need, in the right place, at the right time. The immediate benefits will be felt by the Royal Hobart Hospital, as additional bed options means reduced pressure on our staff and patients.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to improving mental health services in Tasmania, through our $104 million plan, which has the support of experts and stakeholders.
The Hospital in the Home service is being set up so that patients can get the care they need sooner while we build a brand new 12-bed dedicated mental health facility on a greenfield site at St John’s Park in New Town. Those beds, along with the beds at the Peacock Centre, will bring the total number of community-based mental health beds to 27. On top of that, we are also delivering new adolescent mental health beds for the first time ever in Tasmania – at the LGH and RHH.
We are working hard to deliver a mental health system Tasmanians deserve, which incorporates the right mix of acute, community and preventative care.
