Welcoming the Special Olympics to Launceston

The Liberal Government welcomes the announcement by Special Olympics Australia that the 2020 Junior National Games and 2022 National Games will be held in Launceston.

Special Olympics Australia has made the official announcement today that an anticipated 3000 competitors and their support teams will be converging on Northern Tasmania in the coming years.

The Government has worked closely with Special Olympics Australia, Tourism Northern Tasmania and the Launceston City Council to secure these events.

We will provide $500,000 in funding through Events Tasmania to support the events in Launceston. The Launceston City Council is also providing $100,000 towards the event.

Both events will bring huge economic benefits to Launceston and Northern Tasmania. It will be a great boost for local businesses and accommodation providers.

During 2017-18 Events Tasmania supported 72 events, which attracted 82,000 visitors to the State, injecting about $82.5 million into our economy.

We look forward to welcoming Special Olympians from all over the country to Launceston in October 2020 and March/April 2022.
