Water for Profit program benefits farmers

The Hodgman Liberal Government has delivered on its promise to support farmers to increase their business through irrigation.

Today’s Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) statewide irrigation conference heard about the success of the Water for Profit program.

Over four years Water for Profit equipped farmers and service providers with the right skills and information to increase profits and sustainability.

It has demonstrated that practical research and innovation is critical to farmers maximising the benefits from the investment in irrigation.

This Government has a record of delivering for agriculture and will continue to do so.

As the new Minister for Primary Industries and Water, I am focused on working alongside our State’s strong agriculture sector to take the industry to the next level.

This is why we have committed to increasing the State contribution to the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture to a total of $28 million over five years and investing an additional $7 million to modernise our Crown and TIA research farm assets.

The comprehensive Agri-Food Plan we took to the election sets out how we will continue to grow the value of our agricultural exports ten-fold to $10 billion a year by 2050.

Irrigation development has a major role in achieving this target.

Through practical research, innovation and collaboration, Tasmanian agriculture has a strong and exciting future.
