Jeremy Rockliff, Acting Premier

Vale Shirley Walters

Shirley Walters was a proud Liberal Party member who will be remembered fondly for her passionate pursuit of issues that impacted on Tasmania and as a  trail blazer in the Senate.

In 1975 Shirley Walter’s became the first female Senator to represent Tasmania.

Her 18 years in the Senate reflected both Shirley’s commitment to standing up for Tasmania, and the respect with which she was held among the Tasmanian population.

During this time Shirley secured many major investments for Tasmania, one of her greatest achievements was successfully lobbying for the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme with her fellow Liberal Senators.

Shirley Walters was awarded life membership of the Liberal Party for her service to the party, which continued well after her retirement.

My condolences to Shirley’s family; while she may be gone she will never be forgotten.
