Unprecedented response to call for teacher recruits

More than 600 applications have been received as part of the majority Hodgman Liberal Government’s More Teachers, Quality Teaching 4-year Action Plan to recruit staff and re-build the education system.

The Department of Education’s recent nation-wide recruitment drive for teachers generated an unprecedented level of interest, with 628 teachers submitting applications to be considered for vacancies in 2019.

This is part of our 6-year roll out of 358 more staff employed in our public education system, including 250 additional teachers and 80 additional teacher assistants, which is only possible due to our strong financial management.

It is on top of our recent offer to the AEU to recruit an additional 95 news teachers in 2019 in specialist areas like maths, music, arts and sports teachers to further reduce teacher workload issues.

As well as an impressive number of submissions, it is pleasing that a high number of candidates expressed interest in working in regional Tasmania.  This, along with the broad cross-section of skills from applicants provides a high degree of confidence in our ability to place teachers with quality teaching practices and appropriate specialisations in schools throughout the State.

Supporting quality teaching is a core strategic driver for the Department, with application assessment being made in reference to the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) quality standards, recommendations from the Education Workforce Roundtable, and the Department’s Strategic Plan.

Shortlisting of the 628 applications received has been completed, with successful candidates (240) advancing to the next stage of the process, which is due to commence later this month.

This next stage will involve candidates participating in face-to-face interviews, group interaction, and learning-based presentations.

The process is due to be finalised in December when offers of employment will be made to successful candidates.

The Hodgman Liberal Government’s targeted investment in education, from birth through to year 12 and beyond, will ensure Tasmania has a job-ready generation of young people with the skills to participate in a modern economy.

Our targets for Education and training infrastructure include:

  • Invest a record $324 million over 6 years into Education including 250 more teachers and 358 new staff in total.
  • Invest $192 million in education and training infrastructure.
  • By 2020 be at or above the national standard in every single NAPLAN measurement in reading, writing, maths and science.
  • Ensure the retention rate of students from years 10-12 is at or above the national average by 2022.
  • 75 per cent of all students to complete their TCE by 2022.
  • Increase the long-term average investment in public infrastructure by 20 per cent
