Turning the Green Tide for First Time in Tasmania's History

For the first time in our State's history the Green tide is being turned and the balance is being reset after the Tasmanian people said resoundingly at the March election that "enough is enough".

The Liberal Government believes our Forests Bill will be a turning point for Tasmania; tearing up the job-destroying forest agreement forced on our State by Labor and the Greens.

We are rebuilding the forest industry, making clear that there will be no more lock ups and working to remove reserves from the clutches of the Green locksmiths.

We have established the Ministerial Advisory Council to bring together the key industry groups, including private forestry and special timbers, which will help drive our plans for growth.

After the 2010 election Labor sold out the Tasmanian people to gain Green support and stave off its own demise.

The result was the worst example of the deliberate dismantling of an industry in our history.

More than 60 per cent of forestry jobs disappeared in the five years to 2013, as a draft report produced by the University of Canberra explains.

In the Southern Midlands, for example, there were 207 jobs in forestry and associated in 2008, but by 2013, there were just four left. While in Glamorgan-Spring Bay, where there were 193 forestry jobs in 2008, there were just seven in 2013.

This is a truly shocking snapshot of the devastation of the industry while Labor was busy appeasing the Greens.

The Liberal Government is getting on with the job of cleaning up the mess and rebuilding the forest industry.
