A major milestone for new Elwick track

Work continues to progress on the $12.5 million redevelopment of the Elwick thoroughbred track with the laying of new turf now underway.

The new 28-metre wide StrathAyr grass track will deliver first-class facilities and is due to be ready in time to host the Tasmanian Racing Club’s Derby meeting on January 31, followed by the 2020 Hobart Cup meeting on February 9.

Tasmanian company StrathAyr has employed additional staff for the project while also engaging many other Tasmanian contractors to work on the redevelopment, which is great news for the economy and in line with our Buy Local policy.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is a strong supporter of our Thoroughbred racing industry that contributes almost $100 million to the local economy every year.

The new 64,000 square metres of StrathAyr turf has been specially grown at its Richmond property for the project, and will result in a superior track that will benefit the industry in the long-term.

The new track demonstrates the benefits of Tasracing’s sustainable financial position that is allowing them to reinvest in much-needed infrastructure improvements such as this.
