The Hodgman Liberal Government passionately supports Tasmania’s world class inland fisheries which attract about 25,000 recreational anglers each year and generate $90 million for the economy.
The quality of our inland waters has been recognised with the State recently selected to host the 2019 World Fly Fishing Championship, which represents an enormous tourism and Brand Tasmania opportunity.
Tasmania enjoys some of the best trout fishing in the world with superb fishing opportunities, like Craigbourne Dam, right on our doorstep.
One of the ways the Inland Fisheries Service manages the fishery on behalf of all Tasmanians is through its annual stocking program. Wild adult brown trout are stocked in autumn/winter each year with fish harvested from fish traps in the Central Highlands.
Today is the first instalment of 300 wild brown trout, which will be released into Craigbourne Dam along with some large Atlantic Salmon.
The Inland Fisheries Service has already stocked the popular fisheries at Four Springs Lake (6540), Penstock Lagoon (3394) and Lake Crescent (3116) amongst others.
Craigbourne Dam is one of a few select waters open to fishing all year, with most inland waters opening on Saturday 5 August.
The coming 2017-18 trout season is shaping up as even better than last year and I would encourage as many people as possible to buy a licence and enjoy the great trout fishing that Tasmania has to offer.
