Trout Expo casts a wide net

Anglers young and old will line up in Cressy over the next few days to catch much sought after wild brown trout.

Now in its 13th year, the Cressy Community Trout Expo is a three-day event held across the third weekend of September each year.

The expo is a great initiative to introduce new people to angling and promote trout fishing in Tasmania, offering two days of angling-licence-exempt fishing.

There is also a school only team competition on the Monday, which introduces the younger generation to one of Tasmania’s favourite pastimes.

The Hodgman Liberal Government supports growing the reputation and appeal of our world-class trout fishery, and we have provided $30,000 to Trout Guides and Lodges Tasmania (TGALT) and Anglers Alliance Tasmania (AAT) to market and promote angling tourism, including the Cressy Expo.

Planning is also well underway for the new $300,000 program to build and upgrade toilets and amenities at popular fishing locations. Proposed sites include Bronte Lagoon, Four Springs Lake, Lake Crescent, Little Pine Lagoon, Penstock Lagoon, Wood Lake, Tungatinah Lagoon, Lake Binney, Bradys Lake, and Lake Augusta.

Trout fishing in Tasmania attracts over 5,000 mainland and overseas anglers each year, and these upgrades also focus on potential venues for the World Fly Fishing Championship in 2019.

Over 26,000 anglers are licenced to fish in Tasmania each year and to make it easier for Tasmanians enjoy trout fishing the Government has frozen the cost of inland trout fishing licences at 2017-18 prices for the next four years.

I would like to thank Hydro Tasmania, the Cressy Community, and the Inland Fisheries Service for their work promoting and running the fantastic Cressy Trout Expo.
