The signing today of an updated Tourism and Forestry Protocol Agreement is further evidence that forestry and tourism can co-exist and prosper.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is the strongest supporter of both tourism and forestry and the jobs and economic growth they offer regional Tasmania.
The agreement is between the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania, Forestry Tasmania, Forest Industries Association of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association and boosts communication, consultation and co-operation.
The agreement recognises that tourism and forestry are part of the Tasmanian landscape and that we have an extensive and well managed reserve system that is available for multiple uses on a sustainable basis.
Increasingly nature-based tourism products are being developed and sought by visitors which requires awareness and respect for all businesses to succeed.
This updated agreement includes protocols around the visual impact of harvesting and regeneration burns, road ownership and use, land tenure and understanding future harvesting plans.
It is a sensible and adaptable agreement designed to build co-operation and reduce conflict, understanding that both industries are integral to Tasmania’s future.
Congratulations to the parties involved for this mature and sensible agreement which proves that there doesn’t need to be conflict in the forests and, in fact, we should be celebrating and embracing the benefits of both tourism and forestry.
