Tasmanian students who have excelled in this year’s NAPLAN tests are being recognised with special ceremonies across the state during November.
State-wide the achievements of 277 students will be celebrated for being either Top in School, in the top 1 per cent of the state, or both.
Today’s ceremony at Prospect High School honours Northern Tasmanian students with other ceremonies held in the North-West and South.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is vitally aware of the importance of developing effective literacy and numeracy in young people so they can live a fulfilling life.
We have set bold targets to be at, or above, the national standard in every NAPLAN measurement in reading, writing, maths and science by 2020.
Success in these critical areas of education equips our young people with the necessary tools to participate fully across all curriculum areas of study and, of course, in life.
While there is still work to do, these events are a chance to publicly celebrate students who are already excelling in literacy and numeracy.
I’d also like to congratulate not only these students, but every student participating in NAPLAN this year for their hard work.
Improving literacy and numeracy skills a key priority for the Tasmanian Government which is why we investing in a number of literacy initiatives, including a new Literacy Strategy delivered by a Literacy Coach in every Tasmanian Government school.
The Coaches will be employed as a part of our record investment of $324 million into education, including 358 more staff and $192 million in education and training infrastructure.
