Alcohol and other Drug Treatment Services

The Tasmanian alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector has been constructively engaging in process to develop the Tasmanian Alcohol and Other Drugs Service System Framework, which is a key action under the North West Drug Review.

As part of this process, Siggins Miller consultancy was commissioned to produce a report titled “A single Tasmanian alcohol and other drugs (AOD) service system framework”.

The Government acknowledges the strong interest of the AOD sector in this Report and, accordingly, has taken the decision to make the Report publicly available.

The findings and comparisons made in the Report are based on the Drug and Alcohol Service Planning (DASP) population modelling, as well as available data and input from the AOD sector.  Further work is now being undertaken to understand how the findings may apply to the Tasmanian context and whether it correlates with the experiences of AOD organisations, service providers and consumers.

The Government has a strong commitment to developing an AOD sector that is better able to assist and support vulnerable Tasmanians in their time of need, which is why the capacity of the AOD sector in Tasmania is already being bolstered by the Government’s commitments during the recent election, including:

  • $6 million for 30 new rehabilitation beds around the State;
  • $2.5 million to secure the 12 new residential rehabilitation beds in the North West for three additional years; and
  • $1 million for new community-based AOD supports and services.

This funding comes on top of $4.8 million of additional investment made by the Government during the last term which supported a range of AOD initiatives, including improvements to patient transport for Tasmanians on the North West and opening 12 new residential rehabilitation beds in Ulverstone.

We acknowledge the ongoing commitment and constructive contributions made by the AOD sector to both the Report and development of the Framework, and we look forward to continuing this important work.
