THS working with the RANZCP

The Hodgman Liberal Government takes the issue of training accreditation seriously and is committed to seeing the Tasmanian Health Service work closely with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry (RANZCP) for the restoration of training for psychiatric registrars at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

It’s important to highlight this impacts only training, and patients will continue to receive care. The registrars impacted will also continue their training in the community.

While the Hodgman Government is increasing mental health services, opening more beds at the Royal and in the community to meet growing demand - Labor’s only plan for health is the medi-hotel thought bubble, which would see our hotels filled up with sick people and further tie up paramedics.

Last week we announced more beds would open at the Royal, which includes a Multipurpose Short Stay Unit near the Emergency Department that can be configured for five mental health beds, as well as six additional rehabilitation beds at the Tolosa Street Rehabilitation Centre in Glenorchy.

Services in the Royal’s mental health unit will continue to operate as normal.

While there is a national shortage of qualified psychiatric staff, we are working hard to recruit more psychiatric doctors and nurses.

The Hodgman Government is meeting the challenges seen in the health service and getting on with the job of delivering a health service Tasmanians deserve.
