Three years of the Hodgman Liberal Government
Today marks three years since the election of
the Hodgman Liberal Government.
Tasmania has come a long way in that time.
Our economy is growing strongly; our budget
is back in balance; and as a result we are investing more in essential services
like health, education, public safety and supporting those Tasmanians who need
it most.
Since coming to office:
- Unemployment
is down 1.6 per cent, and the number of people employed is up by 4,300;
- The
budget is back in the black ahead of schedule and Gross State Product has grown
by more than $1 billion;
- We
have 140 more nurses, 61 more police on the beat and 113 more teachers;
- Elective
surgery waiting lists fell to the lowest level on record and are currently down
by 20 per cent, elective surgery volumes have increased by 24 per cent and
waiting lists for general dental care for adults have more than halved;
- Enrolments
in the high schools we have extended to year 12 has increased by 57 per cent and apparent retention
rates are up five per cent;
- The
cost of living has improved with electricity prices down by 2.4 per cent and
the cost of car registration is down 7.5 per cent;
- TT-Line
passengers have increased 27 per cent and daily sailings have doubled;
- We’ve
seen a 62 per cent increase in cruise ship visits and a 23 per cent increase in
overall visitor spending; and
- Total
Tasmanian wood production is up 33 per cent and total wood exports excluding
paper/newsprint is up 37 per cent
To name just a few things - the full
comparative table can be found here: http://bit.ly/TasComparativeStats
There is no doubt that Tasmania has changed
for the better since the election, but there is a lot more to do.
We know not everyone is feeling the benefits
of the stronger economy, or record low elective surgery waiting lists, or an
improved education system; which is why we are now focussed on delivering the
next stage of our long-term Plan, Building Tasmania’s Future.
There is a lot more to do, and that is what we
are firmly focussed on.
