Tasmanians are encouraged to join the FAST Response Team by knowing and sharing the signs of stroke during National Stroke Week 2017 (September 4 to 10).
When it comes to stroke, every minute counts. With 1400 strokes expected to occur in Tasmania and 56,000 around Australia this year, we all have a role to play in knowing the signs of stroke.
FAST stands for:
Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
Arms – Can they lift both arms?
Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
Time – Is critical. If you see any of these symptoms act FAST and call 000 immediately.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to making the state the healthiest population in Australia by 2025 through our Healthy Tasmania 5 Year Strategic Plan, and that is why we are keen to highlight that risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and physical inactivity, are preventable.
Our plan provides the information and tools for individuals and communities to make positive, healthy changes in their life, that could prevent stroke.
I encourage all Tasmanians to take some time to learn about stroke and how to respond if you or someone you know starts showing symptoms.
By knowing the signs of stroke you join the FAST Response Team and could save a life.
