Tennis Investment Serving Up a Host of Benefits to Burnie

The return of the Burnie International following an upgrade to court surfaces supported by the Liberal Government has brought international exposure, more visitors and a world-class sporting event to the North-West Coast.

The Liberal Government was among the first to support the Burnie Tennis Club in its fight to keep the ATP Challenger Tour and ITP Women’s Circuit event when its courts were ruled to no longer be up to standard.

Our $250,000 election commitment, together with funds from the Turnbull Coalition Government and the Burnie City Council, has helped deliver arguably one of the best regional tennis complexes in Australia.

The resurfacing of the courts, new fencing and lighting has allowed Burnie and the surrounding region to again host players, coaches and their families from around the world and has secured the event’s future.

This provides an economic boost for the local business community, helping to create and sustain jobs in hospitality.

The Caterpillar Burnie International is also providing international exposure for the city and Tasmania with games livestreamed by Tennis Australia.

Local players – from juniors to masters – will benefit from not only being able to watch top-class action, but also from enjoying international standard courts.

This project is a great example of how investing in sporting facilities can bring benefits across the community.

We congratulate the Burnie Tennis Club, the council and the local contractors on delivering the refurbishments and bringing back the Burnie International.
