Tenders are now being called for detailed design and construction of the new four-lane Hobart Airport Interchange project that will replace the existing Hobart airport roundabout.
Motorists can look forward to a new, free-flowing interchange to improve safety and reduce the peak time traffic congestion on this busy section of the Tasman Highway.
The works will include removal of the existing roundabout and construction of a four-lane overpass, or ‘flyover’, with the realigned Holyman Avenue (to/from airport) and Kennedy Drive (to/from Cambridge) passing over the Tasman Highway.
This will mean that the four-lane Tasman Highway traffic below the new flyover will flow unimpeded towards Hobart or Sorell.
The new interchange will also greatly improve access to Hobart Airport and support predicted growth in visitor numbers, air freight transport and commercial development.
When complete, the project will feature a two-lane off-ramp to the Hobart Airport, a continuous flow on-ramp from the Airport towards Hobart, with 1.6 kilometres of the Tasman Highway upgraded including extension of the dual carriageway.
Delivery of this significant project forms an important element of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s South East Traffic Solution election policy commitment.
The Australian and State Governments have committed $30 million to the project and construction is expected to start in early 2020 and is due for completion in mid-2022.
