TasTAFE upskilling a job ready generation of Tasmanians

Over 90 per cent of employers confirm TasTAFE training provides the workforce skills applicants need to be job ready, and over 80 per cent of TasTAFE graduates agree they were well prepared for the labour market.

The TasTAFE 2015-2016 Annual Report, tabled in Parliament today, includes figures from a 2016 Independent Learners and Employers survey conducted by EMRS.

Over the past year nearly 25,000 students enrolled at 13 TasTAFE campuses across 370 diverse qualifications, and it is heartening to see an increase in apprentice numbers across some of Tasmania’s key jobs growth industries including agriculture, construction, automotive, and information technology.

Since 2014 the Hodgman Government has been supporting TasTAFE’s transition to a more contemporary business model, including a workforce redesign so it can operate more effectively in an increasingly competitive market.

This includes rolling out a state-wide consultation process to ensure the organisation continues to meet the training requirements of current and future students and employers.

Staff will visit over 50 locations across all regions of the state to consult with industry, community groups and individuals to ensure their training needs continue to be met, also meeting with peak bodies and stakeholders to confirm training courses are offered at the right place at the right time.

Sessions have already been held in the Huon Valley and Hobart, with more scheduled over the coming months.

TasTAFE will also benefit from the hard work of this Government over the past two years, with $3 million of funding for TAFE infrastructure upgrades right around the state.

With the Budget back on track the Hodgman Government is to reinvest in essential services such as education and training.
