TasTAFE: New Chair to Lead New Structure

The Liberal Government is supporting TasTAFE to create a more effective and competitive organisation that continues to provide training that meets the needs of the Tasmanian jobs market.

One of my top priorities is ensuring Tasmanians have a public training provider that is focussed on developing real skills for real jobs in a competitive training environment.

I applaud the organisation, particularly outgoing chair Kathryn Thomas and current CEO Stephen Conway, for their exceptional work in designing a new contemporary workforce structure.

The structural changes will remove dual roles that combined manager and teacher, allowing teachers to teach and managers to manage.

A small number of voluntary targeted redundancies, expected to be fewer than 10 FTE, will be quarantined to  management.

The implementation of the new structure has started this month and is expected to continue over the next few months, the consultation will continue throughout.

I thank the staff and unions for their input and cooperation in establishing this new structure, in consultation with the TasTAFE Board.

Again, we're cleaning up the Labor-Greens mess. The previous government gained no efficiencies when they formed TasTAFE in 2013, after the failed implementation of the Polytechnic and Skills Institutes.

During the same term, they also forced TasTAFE to compete for more of its funding, even though its heavy organisational structure meant it could not compete with private RTOs on price.

Our Government wants TasTAFE to compete effectively in an increasingly competitive training environment, and this new operating structure will ensure just that.

I am also excited to announce the appointment of Nick Burrows as the interim chair of TasTAFE.

Mr Burrows comes into the role after the previous chair, Kathryn Thomas, stepped down last month due to her increasingly demanding role with IBM.

On behalf of the Government, I thank Mr Burrows  for his continued commitment to TasTAFE.
