TasTAFE innovation improves digital literacy

TasTAFE campuses are embracing innovation with three new DigiLabs to help improve digital literacy skills.

The DigiLabs, in the Hobart, Launceston and Burnie campuses, have been funded by the Hodgman Government through a Skills Tasmania grant.

Located in campus libraries, the Digilabs include 3D printers, virtual reality glasses and games, and a virtual office.

The labs open up a world of possibilities for training, assessment, and employment, and will also be used to teach a new TasTAFE qualification - 3D Gamification and Entrepreneurialism.

DigiLabs show how technology can be applied to learning with a focus on entrepreneurial skills, giving students access to innovative techniques such as printing prototypes on 3D printers and testing their ideas in a practical way.

This is about encouraging innovation and equipping students with the skills they need for the jobs of the future.

Today’s launch of DigiLabs is a great lead-in to TasTAFE’s Festival of Teaching which begins next week, held from 24 - 28 October at TasTAFE campuses throughout the state and online.

This festival will showcase excellence in practice, share ideas, offer learning opportunities, build conversation and collaboration between staff and build momentum for innovation in teaching and learning.

TasTAFE teachers are important contributors to changing the educational path of Tasmania as they share practical skills and industry knowledge, and this festival gives them the opportunity to further improve learning experiences for their students.

DigiLabs are another way the Hodgman Government is working with the education sector to create a job ready generation of young Tasmanians.
