Tassie lakes brimming for season opening

It time to dust off your wading boots and start tying flies because the brown trout season opens this weekend.

This season is tipped to be a bumper one for the thousands of keen anglers from across the state, interstate and overseas who’ll be casting a line.

Thanks to the hard work of our Inland Fisheries Service, our lakes are brimming with big fish that have been proactively stocked.

This year, Inland Fisheries has continued to expand its program of wild adult brown trout transfers sourced from migratory traps in the Central Highlands.

Anglers will have some fantastic opportunities to hook these quality fish in popular waters including Bradys Lake, Four Springs Lake, Penstock Lagoon, Tooms Lake and Lake Crescent.

Trout fishing in Tasmania’s unique environment is not only a flourishing recreational pursuit for families and dedicated anglers, it is also a major tourism drawcard.

Every year around 28,000 licenced anglers revel in our trout fishing, with all the fees going directly to improving the fishery.

I encourage all anglers to enjoy our world class fisheries, but also observe the rules and regulations that are in place to ensure the sustainable management of the fishery.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is proud of our trout fishery and is committed to strengthening the Inland Fisheries Service, including returning a permanent Inland Fisheries Service Officer to the North West and at Liawenee and improving access for anglers.

An angling licence is required to fish at any open inland water for anglers over the age of 14 and can be purchased online at www.ifs.tas.gov.au or at tackle stores and Service Tasmania shops.

The brown trout season is from August 1, 2015 to Sunday May 1, 2016, with rainbow trout waters opening slightly later, on October 3, 2015 and closing on May 29, 2016.
