The Tasmanian Liberal Government has reached a deal with North Melbourne which will see Tasmania represented in the AFLW expansion.
A new partnership between NMFC and the Government will result in the creation of the North Melbourne Tassie Kangaroos and AFLW matches played in Tasmania from 2019.
The formation of the Tassie Kangaroos is a major step forward for football in our State.
In a first, an AFL team will officially carry 'Tasmania' in its name and the team will wear a special “Tassie Kangaroos” guernsey for home games.
This will result in massive exposure for our State with the AFLW captivating more than 5.5 million TV viewers and more than 12 million online viewers.
The Tassie Kangaroos will play half of their home games in Tasmania.
As part of the deal the NMFC will also establish a permanent training base here and grow its presence in Tasmania.
Our State has a strong history with the North Melbourne Football Club and this partnership strengthens it, giving our talented young female players an opportunity to increase their skills and competition levels.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government is proud to be supporting women’s sport at the highest level, and we welcome the Tassie Kangaroos to our sporting line up.
The total Government investment for five AFLW seasons is $500,000 per year, starting in 2019.
The AFL has advised it is investing significantly more in the North Melbourne Tassie Kangaroos than they provide to any other AFLW team. It is welcome that for the first time the AFL is putting additional resources into backing a Tasmanian team.
