Tasmanians on national training awards stage

The Liberal Government is committed to ensuring Tasmanians have access to world-class education and skills training.

Last week saw Tasmania represented in eight categories at the Australian Training Awards in Adelaide, attended by about 750 guests including Ian MacFarlane MP, the Commonwealth Minister for Industry.

In a fantastic result for a Tasmanian training organisation, Seafood Training Tasmania won the Small Training Provider of the Year Award.

Seafood Training Tasmania (STT) is the largest training provider to Tasmania's seafood industry.

Since commencing operations in 1986 as the Fishing Industry Training Board, STT has grown to offer 20 nationally recognised courses to more than 600 students each year.

With the aquaculture sector growing in size and economic importance in Tasmania, this recognition of a Tasmanian training provider ensures the industry has access to the highest-quality training for its growing number of employees.

In another fantastic achievement, Tasmanian Christopher Medcraft was named Runner-up in the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year category.

Congratulations also to Tasmania's other finalists Richard Wilkinson (apprentice), Caitlyn Webb (trainee), Brad Fairlie (school-based apprentice), Alison Rogers (vocational student) and Carmen Gumley (VET Teacher/Trainer).

Tasmania was also represented by TasTAFE, one of only three national finalists in the Large Training Provider category.

The Liberal Government is working with employers, industry bodies and training organisations to deliver a more efficient and competitive training system, a greater focus on delivering real skills for real jobs, and investment in skills that drive State growth.
