Tasmanian students urged to help tackle bullying through new video competition

The Liberal Government takes bullying seriously, and that's why we are today launching a video competition to promote community awareness and education, particularly among younger Tasmanians.

Students will be invited to produce a short video that focuses on bystanders and the role they can play in working against bullying, especially cyberbullying, in our community.

One very effective strategy to address bullying, in all its forms, is to empower bystanders to act; to speak up rather than to remain quiet.

We all have a role to play in tackling this serious social issue that, in its worst cases, has tragically claimed the lives of young Tasmanians.

This competition is open to students from all Tasmanian schools, public and private, from Kinder to Year 12.

The initiative follows recent visits to Tasmania by internationally-acclaimed health educator Professor Donna Cross, who shared research in forums across the state on aggression and bullying among young people.

All schools are working hard to ensure their communities build and maintain respectful relationships that are free from this kind of behaviour.

The video competition aims to raise further awareness in the wider community on how people can help by not being passive bystanders to bullying.

Winners will receive an iPad, with six in total up for grabs, and more information will be available from early next week.
