Tasmanian stories told through 10 unique objects

Today I had the pleasure of officially opening the 10 Objects – 10 Stories: Celebrating Community Collections exhibition at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston.

Tasmania’s small museums and collections play an important role as the custodians and story tellers of our unique cultural heritage. This exhibition tells part of Tasmania’s social history through the diverse objects selected from the community museums that can be found around the state.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a proud supporter of the over 140 largely volunteer-run small museums and collections.

We provide support through Arts Tasmania’s Cultural Heritage and Roving Curator programs which are focused on improving best practice in the preservation of Tasmania’s heritage so the objects and their stories are maintained for future generations.

The exhibition includes a precious teddy bear that belonged to Alexander George Innes II, a Gunner with the 2/8 Field regiment, AIF Abroad who fought in the Battle of El Alamein. He took this coveted childhood toy with him when he served overseas and it is now part of the Wynyard RSL collection.

Also featured in the exhibition is a handcrafted quilt made by people outside the local Tasman community in response to the 1996 tragedy at Port Arthur.

Congratulations to all involved in bringing 10 Objects – 10 Stories: Celebrating Community Collections to life and I encourage everyone to visit this unique exhibition.
