Tasmanian Stands on Top of the World

Today I moved a motion in the Tasmanian Parliament congratulating John Zeckendorf for summiting Mt Everest-- the first Tasmanian to do so according to the Himalayan Mountain Database, the official register of Everest climbers.

Mount Everest, Earth’s highest mountain, is considered the pinnacle of mountaineering and one of the most hazardous climbs in the world.

After a two month expedition in Nepal, on 27 May John reached the top of Everest, standing for eight minutes on its peak, 8848 metres (29,029 feet) above sea level.

John’s climb has also helped raise funds and support for two local charities, Pathways Tasmania and Power to Change.

I was proud to support John’s climb, providing him with a Tasmanian State Flag, which accompanied him on the entire expedition and was displayed on top of Mount Everest.

I congratulate John on his successful summiting of Mount Everest, acknowledge the support of his family and sponsors including ultra106.5 in Hobart, and trust that his achievement serves as an inspiration to all Tasmanians.
