Congratulations to the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture and the University of Tasmania for breaking into the Top 50 global ranking in the subject of Agricultural Sciences.
The TIA is a joint venture between the Hodgman Liberal Government and the University of Tasmania and employs 130 scientists, educators and technical experts to deliver impact-focused research, development and extension to benefit the Tasmanian agriculture industry.
In the Shanghai Global Rankings of Academic Subjects 2017 the TIA has been ranked at No 44, equal with the University of Sydney and ahead of both the University of Melbourne and ANU in Canberra.
Agricultural research, development and extension is a vital part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s AgriFood Plan and our vision to grow the value of agriculture tenfold by 2050.
TIA receives $5 million annually from the Tasmanian Government and together with external funding from nationally competitive funds it has a research portfolio now valued in excess of $72 million.
We are extremely proud of the world-class research being undertaken by the TIA which is also one of the leading agricultural research institutes in Australia.
Although not a large school by international standards, this outstanding ranking is a reflection of TIA’s quality staff, their innovative programs and quality teaching that attracts students from around the world.
This also shows that Tasmania’s farmers are getting some of the best scientific advice as they innovate, adopt new technologies and improve on-farm productivity to grow even further.
