Tasmanian Government Action Secures Legal Assistance Sector Funding

The Hodgman Liberal Government welcomes the Commonwealth Government’s decision to reverse funding cuts for the Tasmanian legal assistance sector.

Earlier this month I, alongside Attorneys-General from the other states and territories, wrote to Federal Attorney-General George Brandis to call for funding to be restored.

Senator Brandis has today announced that the decision has been reversed, restoring crucial funding for Tasmanian community legal organisations.

I thank Senator Brandis for working cooperatively with the states and territories and legal assistance sector to resolve this issue.

This decision is yet another example of the Tasmanian Liberal Government standing up for Tasmania’s interests and achieving a result. We will always work constructively with the Federal Government to achieve the best outcomes for our state.

Our successful approach stands in stark contrast to the ineffectual ‘table-banging’ favoured by the previous Government and the current Labor opposition.
