Tasmanian farmers are the most confident in the nation

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a rock solid supporter of our farmers and primary producers and welcomes this week’s Rabobank survey showing our farmers are the most confident in the nation.

Tasmania is ideally placed to supply Australian and international consumers with fresh, high quality produce through a proven chain of production.

Our strong vision is to grow the value of Tasmanian agriculture to $10 billion by 2050 and through our comprehensive Agri-Food Plan we are doing just that through a range of initiatives that encourage sustainable growth and boosted biosecurity.

It was extremely pleasing to see farming confidence at its highest level since late 2015 and especially in the dairy sector, where farm-gate margins continue to improve in 2017.

Rabobank said that 73 per cent of Tasmanian dairy farmers expected improved agricultural economic conditions in the year ahead, up 22 per cent on this time last year.

All farmers surveyed looked to increase (66 per cent), or maintain (34 per cent) the level of investment in their farm businesses in the coming year with irrigation and building livestock numbers the highest priority with emerging technologies also an important investment focus.

There is no doubt that 2016 was a tough year for many farmers, but they have bounced back with positive sentiments buoyed by strong markets for beef and lamb and a resurgence in wool.

The Tasmanian Government has stood side-by-side with our farmers during the tough times – working alongside industry groups with business support packages and financial assistance and social support for families and communities.

On the 3rd anniversary of the Hodgman Liberal Government, we are proudly Building Tasmania’s Future with a strong Agri-Food Plan for agricultural growth, promoting Tasmania’s quality Brand and creating more jobs in regional Tasmania.

It is rewarding that our long term Plan is working and has been embraced by the farming and agricultural community and that they share our confidence and enthusiasm in the future.
