Tasmania to host Hockey Australia Championships

Tasmania has signed a major deal with Hockey Australia to bring the country’s best up-and-coming and masters competitors to compete in 10 tournaments over five years from 2016.

This is a huge coup for our tourism and hospitality sectors which will receive a massive boost in the traditionally quieter winter months.

It also cements Tasmania’s place on the national and international tournament circuit, and will inspire Tasmanians to aim for the highest level of one of our favourite sports.

Through Events Tasmania we are contributing $495,000 over five years to secure the series of Hockey Australia championships.

This includes Under 18s Boys and Girls Championships at Hobart, Launceston and the North-West, and Women’s and Men’s Masters Championships in Hobart.

This event brings a high level of guaranteed interstate visitors, with an estimated minimum 13,200 players, officials, family and friends over five years.

This means an estimated 100,000 total bed nights across the state, injecting an estimated $12 million across the state during the quieter winter months, which represents a great return on investment.

It is also expected that many competitors and their families will visit Tasmania before and after these events for a holiday.

Hosting these championships is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our hospitality and build on Tasmania’s proud hockey history.
