Tasmania Prison Service recruit graduation

A total of 24 new graduates were officially sworn in as Correctional Officers today as part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s commitment to keep all Tasmanians safe.

This ceremony brings the total number of new Correctional Officers employed by the Government since 2016 to 107.

Each graduate underwent 13 weeks of training and will now be rostered throughout the various Risdon Prison facilities. Five of these recruits will be located at the Launceston Reception Prison.

The staffing increase is in addition to the Government’s commitment to fund several significant prison infrastructure projects to increase prison capacity and upgrade existing facilities.

This includes funding of $270 million to build a new Northern prison, $70 million over three years to build a new remand facility on the Risdon Prison site and more than $9 million to upgrade facilities at Risdon Prison.

I wish the new recruits all the best as they start their important work in the coming weeks.

The next recruit school is scheduled to start on 10 July.
