Tasmania on world stage with signing of defence MoU

The Hodgman Government is determined to ensure Tasmania receives its fair share of defence funding.

That’s why we released the Our Fair Share of Defence Strategy.  One of the top priorities in the Strategy is to support the development of the specialist skills and training required for defence.  The MoU signed by the University of Tasmania and four leading French institutions involved in the delivery of Future Submarines Program in Adelaide is a perfect example of that.

The Government congratulates the University for pursuing this initiative.  It will put the University’s Australian Maritime College based in Launceston at the forefront of the teaching and research work that will inform the delivery of Australia’s submarine fleet.

In order to increase our share of defence spending, we need to ensure that we have the skills and the linkages with the defence sector to contribute to significant national projects such as this.

This further builds on the capacity we have in the maritime sector and the advanced manufacturing sector and the Government will work with the University to maximise the benefits to Tasmania.
