Tasmania needs guaranteed jail sentences for paedophiles

This week the Hodgman Liberal Government will table and bring on for debate a motion to restore legislation for guaranteed jail sentences for serious sexual offences against children to the notice paper.

If passed, this motion will restore the Bill to the Legislative Council agenda at is second reading stage, and allow another vote on the proposed new law.

Based on the vote on the Bill last time, if Labor supports the motion, it will pass. It would be good to see Labor do some work this week in the Legislative Council - with no private members time business of their own , it’s lazy Labor all over again.

We will continue to stand strong and push for the right punishment for predators who sexually abuse children, and make sure they go to jail.

I still cannot believe Labor Leader Rebecca White is ordering her Legislative Council members to block our legislation.

The proposed new law has the following provisions:

  1. 4 years’ imprisonment for the crime of rape where a victim is under 17 years;
  2. 4 years’ imprisonment for maintaining a sexual relationship with a young person where there are aggravating circumstances and rape;
  3. 3 years’ imprisonment for the crime of maintaining a sexual relationship with a young person where there are aggravating circumstances; and
  4. 2 years’ imprisonment for the crime of sexual intercourse with a young person where there are aggravating circumstances.

If you agree that those who seriously sexually abuse children should serve guaranteed jail time, please sign my petition at https://formlets.com/forms/4twGWphqSgxCupW2/.
