Tasmania continues to improve in latest education results

Lifting Tasmanian education standards is a major priority of the Hodgman Liberal Government and we welcome improvements in today’s results from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

The Study shows that Tasmania is bucking the trend and improving in the areas of maths and science in primary school, with our Year 4 students ranked third in Australia in science and fourth in Australia in maths.

Our Education Plan is working with young students achieving scores that are comparable to the rest of Australia.

Today’s results consolidate the August 2016 release of NAPLAN preliminary results which showed that our students have further narrowed the gap towards our goal of Tasmania being at or above national average within the first six years of our Government.

Continuing to lift education standards including improving literacy, numeracy and science, is one of our Government’s key goals and priorities.

Tasmania’s Year 8 (TIMSS) results in maths and science have improved compared to our 2011 results and are comparable to states such as WA, SA and NSW, however further improvement is needed.

Literacy and Numeracy Coaches are now working collaboratively with teachers and principals in targeted schools to extend teaching and learning strategies.

Additionally, our Learning in Families Together (LIFT) program which supports 80 schools with the highest student need and implementation of the national Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) School Education Strategy 2016-2026 are all targeted at improving educational outcomes.
