Tasmania celebrates 150 years of public education

A formal celebration was held today to mark 150 years of public education in Tasmania.

Today’s event was also an opportunity to unveil 19 Adult and Student Ambassadors who will become the faces of the year-long celebration and who reflect the Department’s Values of Aspiration, Growth, Courage and Respect.

A series of events with the theme “Then, now, and beyond” will promote the achievements and significance of public education in Tasmania, including school led events, a travelling exhibition and a showcase performance.

We want to ensure that every Tasmanian student, no matter where they live or what their background, has the best possible opportunities in life and a good quality education is key to that.

That’s why we have prioritised education since we came to office with 142 more teachers, 63 more professional support staff and 193 more teacher assistants employed since 2014.

We are also delivering on our commitment to employ an extra 250 teachers over the next six years, with the largest ever teacher recruitment drive now underway.

I congratulate all of the Ambassadors announced today and I look forward to more events that showcase the positive difference public education has made to the lives of thousands of Tasmanians.
