Tasmania and Indonesia: University partnership for a stronger future

A new student partnership and cooperation agreement has united two world class universities in Tasmania and Indonesia to build on our growing partnership and deliver enhanced nursing capability in Indonesia.

I joined Australia’s Ambassador to Indonesia, His Excellency Mr Paul Grigson, at his residence in Jakarta tonight to welcome the signing of this significant agreement.

The University of Tasmania (UTAS) and the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia’s top-ranked university, have signed an agreement to cement a double degree Masters of Nursing program for Indonesian students of UGM.

This new partnership helps address a shortfall of qualified senior Nursing lecturers in Indonesia, with Masters students from UGM completing their studies in nursing with UTAS.

Students who complete the program will receive a Masters in Nursing from both UTAS and UGM and are eligible to continue on to a PhD at UTAS.

The agreement is underpinned by Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan (LPDP), the Indonesian Endowment for Education, which provides student access to education and training through targeted scholarships.

LPDP has provided funding for an initial annual intake of 20 nursing students to come to Tasmania.

These high performing students will join the growing ranks of Indonesian alumni of the University of Tasmania and build on the reputation we have as an education destination.

The University of Tasmania has increasingly strong links with Indonesia and I am pleased that the Tasmanian Government is able to support this venture.

The agreement demonstrates how Tasmania’s relationship with Indonesia is developing through key areas of mutual strategic interest such as education, healthcare, maritime and fisheries, and renewable energy.

We look forward to welcoming the first group of nursing students to our state and University in 2017 following their commencement at UGM this year.

The agreement was signed during the Tasmanian Government’s trade mission to India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Singapore, which is focused on increasing opportunities for Tasmania with some of the world’s biggest and fastest-growing economies.
