Tasmania A Hub For Action On Suicide Prevention

The Hodgman Liberal Government is making a significant $3 million investment in suicide prevention programs.

I spoke today at the opening of a national conference in Hobart to discuss suicide prevention.

The National Suicide Prevention Conference brings organisations and individuals with an interest in suicide prevention together to network, collaborate and learn.

The gathering recognises that by working together on the intersection of research, policy, practice and lived experience we can reduce the prevalence and impact of suicide.

The Liberal Government is serious about taking action on suicide prevention.

Since being elected, the Government has committed an additional $3 million into targeted and proactive suicide prevention initiatives.

We are currently developing a new Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy and a Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy, which will be based on contemporary research, policy, practice and lived experience.

Two reports prepared by the Youth Network of Tasmania and released today will form part of the research looked at in the development of the Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy and a Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy.

They will help form a clear picture of the issues that are important to young people when looking after their mental health and wellbeing.

The Tasmanian Government supported the SPA National Conference as principal sponsor, enabling Tasmania to attract 400 experts to our state to discuss this important and complex issue.
