Tasmanians are invited to have their say on the Government’s review of the Local Government Act 1993, with the release of a discussion paper today.
We are committed to improving governance issues in the local government sector.
There are many challenges facing the local government sector and it’s important we make sure they have the right structure and the right tools so that they can best serve their communities.
We are committed to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of local government to reduce costs to ratepayers and to make Tasmania the best place in the country to live, work, invest and raise a family.
We want everyone interested to have their say and have their voices heard. I would also encourage all councils to make a contribution too.
I anticipate any necessary amendments to the Act as a result of the review will be introduced to Parliament by May 2017.
The Local Government Act provides the basis for local government in Tasmania. It establishes the 29 councils, provides for the election of councillors and enables councils to undertake day-to-day activities, including providing local services and levying of rates.
