Fishers and boating enthusiasts on Tasmania’s East Coast welcomed the completion of the Boat Ramp redevelopment at Swansea today after a $1.3 million upgrade.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the redevelopment of the boat ramp was the final phase of the Lower East Coast Marine Infrastructure project.
“Swansea is a scenic coastal town in a prime fishing area that is well-known as the home port for Great Oyster Bay. This project will help improve safety and access to the water for fishers and boost recreational fishing and tourism in the area, providing economic growth in the region for many decades to come,” Mr Chester said.
Senator for Tasmania Jonathon Duniam joined the community for the official opening today and said the project will improve marine safety, particularly during launch and arrivals and night navigation.
“Boating along the East Coast is an important recreational pastime for many Tasmanians and this investment will cement Swansea as a tourism and historic hub for the coast by improving the link between the town and the waterfront and promoting the coastal lifestyle enjoyed by so many,” Senator Duniam said.
Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding said the Swansea Boat Ramp works include a new double lane boat ramp, jetty, extension to the lower landing jetty, and installation of a breakwater wave deflection screen.
“The completion of this vital infrastructure is great news and will not only ensure better amenities for residents, it will also provide even more opportunities for jobs and future growth in the tourism sector on Tasmania’s stunning East Coast,” Minister Hidding said.
The Lower East Coast Marine Infrastructure project was funded by the Coalition Government ($850,000) with the Tasmanian Government contributing $700,000 to the Swansea Boat Ramp.
