Sustainable growth for salmon industry

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government strongly supports responsible and sustainable growth in the Salmon Industry, which provides thousands of direct and indirect jobs, many of which are in regional areas.

Through our Sustainable Industry Growth Plan for the Salmon Industry, we are getting on with the job, including consolidating the marine farming development plans for the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Huon River and Port Esperance into a single plan.

A single plan reflects CSIRO modelling that shows the areas are part of a highly connected system.

The replacement plan, D’Entrecasteaux Channel and Huon River Marine Farming Development Plan October 2019, was recommended by the Marine Farming Planning Review Panel.

It improves alignment with the EPA’s regulation of finfish farming in Tasmania and supports improved biosecurity practices, providing greater flexibility to industry and regulators in managing farming practices within an environmentally connected region.

This does not change the plan area covered in the original separate plans or the leasable salmon marine farming areas that existed under the original plans.

The plan supports our vision for the industry to be the most environmentally sustainable salmon industry in the world, helping to deliver even more benefits to Tasmania.
