Abolition of suspended sentences bill one step closer

The removal of suspended sentences for serious sex offenders, drug traffickers and violent criminals is one step closer following the passing of the Government’s Bill through the House of Assembly.

Criminals see a suspended jail sentence as effectively no punishment at all, which is why we went to the election promising to phase them out and implement a greater range of alternatives and today marks another important step in this process.

Labor, on the other hand, have confirmed yet again they are soft on crime by voting against the legislation, just like they voted against mandatory sentencing for child sex offences and assaults on off duty police officers.

Rebecca White should listen to the community and reconsider Labor’s position before the Bill reaches the Legislative Council.
