Supporting Vulnerable Tasmanians

The Tasmanian Government is committed to assisting Tasmanians who are vulnerable and in need of support, and is proud to kick-start the 2015 Tasmanian Red Shield Appeal with a donation of $30,000.

We are committed to supporting Tasmanians and working with organisations like the Salvation Army to give Tasmanians a hand-up.

This year, the State Government will provide around $300 million worth of concessions to Tasmanians.

We will continue to fill an $8.9 million funding gap left by Federal Government cuts last year and ensure all those who receive concessions will continue to receive them.

The key concessions are:

  • Public Housing Rent Assistance                        around $60m
  • Metro concessions                                             around $40m
  • Electricity Rebate                                               around $40m
  • Rural and Special Needs School Buses            around $25m
  • Water and Sewerage                                         around $14m
  • Local Government Rates                                   around $17m

While the Tasmanian economy is gaining momentum we recognise that some Tasmanians need that extra help to get back on their feet, and that’s why we will top up spending on concessions and support organisations like the Salvos.

The Red Shield Appeal is the Salvation Army’s major annual fundraiser and ensures the charity can continue to support its social and community services across 20 Tasmanian centres.

This year, the Salvation Army hopes to raise $2 million in Tasmania, with $250,000 expected to come from the annual door-knock which begins next week.

The funds raised will go directly to those in greatest need through the Salvation Army’s 70 social and community programs in Tasmania. The Salvation Army provides invaluable support to vulnerable Tasmanians through programs from emergency relief to rural outreach and drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs.

More than a thousand Tasmanians are expected to volunteer to help raise funds, and this year that includes those taking part in the inaugural Tasmanian Red Shield Ride 2015, which began in Burnie last week and finishes at Blackmans Bay today.
