Supporting those affected by Huon River Flood

The Tasmanian Government is stepping in to provide financial assistance to eligible businesses and home-owners affected by the worst floods in Huonville in two decades.

The response of the community was one of great resilience and compassion, and the support from the State Emergency Services and volunteers was immediate and indomitable.

While we are all very thankful that there was no loss of life or serious injuries, it’s estimated that about six homes and 17 businesses have sustained damage.

Unlike the recent floods in Tasmania’s north, the event in the south has not met the thresholds for Australian Government assistance, so the Tasmanian Government is stepping in.

As a Government we have made supporting those in need a priority, and we are able to do this because we have got the budget back on track.

Those affected by the flood in the south will received the same support as those in the north.

The Tasmanian Government’s response includes:

  • Recovery and Restoration Grants: to provide assistance of up to $8,875 to assist with temporary living expenses, replacement of household items, or repairs, restoration and clean-up of homes;
  • Transport Subsidy: to provide assistance for flood-affected primary producers to reduce the cost of transporting fodder, stock and materials following the floods;
  • Flood Recovery Loan Scheme: To provide concessional interest rate loans to eligible businesses and primary producers located in areas affected by floods; and
  • Grants for Clubs and Not-for-Profits: provide grants of up to $2,000 for sporting clubs and not-for-profit organisation to contribute towards clean-up efforts, replacement of equipment or hiring of facilities for use by members.

Today I was able to personally thank some of the many SES staff and volunteers, and the council, who worked tirelessly to ensure the damage was not even worse.

During the day leading up to the flood, SES volunteers doorknocked dozens of homes, the SES and council filled 3,500 sandbags and the night the flood hit, 13 SES staff and volunteers worked through the night to protect locals, evacuate homes and redirect traffic.

It is extremely heartening to see that the worst of times have brought out the very best in us.
